This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong even without a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though the lead actress achieves to present the character with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4
